Chapter 2

1.   Guidance for Older Christian 1 - 3.

V1.   But as for you, communicate the behavior that goes with sound teaching.

Paul's instructuions to Titus is that he must teach those things that deal with living a righteous life according to sound doctrine (the character and right living that identify true Christians Amp. Bible).

V2.  Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled,1 sound in faith, in love, and in endurance.

The older Christian men in age are to exercise self-control to be dignified thus worthy of respect.   They are to be sensible, possessing good judgment and precaution and be well grounded in the faith filled with the love of God and patient.

V3.    Older women likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but teaching what is good.

The older Christian women must also do likewise and live a life that is fitting  for those who are Christ's.   They must not slander others, make malicious statements, or be enslaved by drink.   Instead, they must teach others about the good things of godly living.

2.   Guidance for Younger Christans 4 - 8.

V4.  In this way they will train the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children,

By doing this they will be an example and training the younger Christian women to love their husbands.  Gill says "to help and assist them all they can; to seek their honour and interest; to endeavour to please them in all things; to secure peace, harmony, and union; to carry it affectionately to them, and sympathize with them in all afflictions"  He is quite right for having a love for someone a matter of words but of action.   Also to love their children and again I quote Gill "not with a fond, foolish, loose, and ungoverned affection; but so as to seek their real good, and not only their temporal, but spiritual and eternal welfare"   To bring them up in the nurture and admonishment of the Lord for the exhortation to fathers in Ephesians is applicable for mothers also.

V5.   to be self-controlled, pure, fulfilling their duties at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the message of God may not be discredited

They should be in control of themselves, morally pure, be good housewives and work in the home.   Be kindhearted and obedient to their husbands so that the word of God is not blasphemed.

V6.   Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled

The younger Christian men should be exhorted to be self-restrained and seriously minded.

V7.   showing yourself to be an example of good works in every way. In your teaching show integrity, dignity,

Titus himself must in all aspects be a good example in every way.   In everything that he does he must show the integrity and seriousness of his teaching.

V8.   and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, because he has nothing evil to say about us.

Teaching the truth of the message that cannot be criticized so that anyone who opposes the Word will have nothing to find fault or speak evil of the messengers.

3.   Exhortation for Christian Servants 9 - 10.

V9.   Slaves are to be subject to their own masters in everything, to do what is wanted and not talk back,

Servants who are Christians must be willing to put themselves under the authority of their masters and to be obedient to them.  To do their very best as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23) and not to answer back.

V10.   not pilfering, but showing all good faith, in order to bring credit to the teaching of God our Savior in everything.

They are not to take anything that does not belong to them but show that they are completely trustworthy.   Their lives will then be a witness to God our Saviour.

4.   The Grace of God 11 - 15.

V11.   For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people.

The lovingkindness of God has been shown through His love and mercy in  giving His only begotten Son the Lord Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for sin thus bringing salvation to everybody who calls on His name (Psalm 86:5, Acts 2:21).

V12.   It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

It is the grace of God that teaches us to live a godly life to turn away from all that is ungodly and of the world  (1 John 2: 15 - 16).   We should live in this evil world in wisdom, (James 1: 5)  righteousness and complete devotion to God.

V13.    as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

In anticipation of the fulfillment of the blessed hope that we have; the glorious appearance, return  of our God and Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ ( Acts 1:11, Hebrews 10:37).

V14.   He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good.

It is Jesus Christ who gave Himself upon the cross as an atonement for our sins and has redeemed us to God and has delivered us from every kind of sin.   He has cleansed us and made us His own people so that we may totally commit ourselves to doing good works (Ephesians 2:10).

V15.   So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke that carries full authority. Don't let anyone look down on you.

Paul exhorts Titus to teach all these things to the Cretans and thus to every believer and if necessary admonish with the full authority that he has.   Titus must not allow anyone to regard him with contempt, to defy or resist his authority.
