An insurance salesman called on an elderly couple and tried to persuade them that they needed security for the next 10 years of their lives. The old man replied, “Son, at our age we don’t even buy green bananas!”

The only absolute certainty for any of us is that one day our life will come to an end. However, unlike other milestones in life’s journey, we do not find it easy to prepare for the final one.

Books are written on bringing up children, marriage guidance, middle age crisis, the trauma of chronic illness, managing on a pension, but I have yet to find any books which deal with the subject of growing old gracefully – except, of course, for the Bible.

Psalm 71 says:

O God, You have taught me from my youth, And I still declare Your wondrous deeds. And even when I am old and grey, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come. (Psalm 71:17-18)

Whenever I hear, or read, a discussion concerning today’s young people and the way in which society is going, I am reminded of these words. Those of us who are elderly were taught to respect God and honour his word, and it is one of our responsibilities to pass on what we have learned to the next generation.

When I was a teenager, I used to visit an elderly lady in our village called Mrs Honey. She was bed ridden and often in pain but invariably her demeanour was as sweet as her name.

One hot summer’s day I called in and I was describing to her my plans for a holiday. She listened patiently and then she spoke. She said, “I am looking forward to a most wonderful holiday.” I looked at her — in disbelief really. She smiled and then explained, “My dear, one day soon I will be on my way to heaven!”

Possibly some in our modern generation might think Mrs. Honey was “bananas!” But we must never allow our faith to become old and grey when God intends us to have a fresh joy in his presence every day, so that in spite of age it is always springtime in our soul!
