1. Greetings V1 - 2
2Ti 1:1 From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise of life in Christ Jesus,
Although this was originally a personal letter to Timothy, Paul's right hand man, lieutenant if you like, and they had a very close relationship , he nevertheless commences his letter in a formal manner. He is not informing or reminding Timothy of his apostleship but he can never forget the noble work to which he had been called. This calling was not by the will of man or even of himself but of God. He qualifies this calling by saying according to the promise of life. He
2Ti 1:2 to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!
In 1 Timothy he addressing him as his true son in the faith, here as his dearly beloved son. There can be no doubt that he was held in a most affectionate manner with the apostle. This spiritual greeting is full of meaning, grace, the unearned favour of God which He alone gives, mercy, God's tender care and concern, peace, that is peace of heart or soul. These three are of God but comes to us through His Son, Jesus Christ.
2. Faithfulness and Faith V3 - 5
2Ti.1:3 I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day.
As he faithfully served God as a Jew, as his ancestors did (Acts 24: 14), so he serves Him now as a Christian with a pure conscience, that is he had no ulterior motives but to serve God. Paul's faithfulness to Timothy is shown here as he is ever mindful of him and is faithful in prayer never ceasing day or night to remember Timothy before the Throne of Grace.
2Ti 1:4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.
Paul had left Timothy in Ephesus and he brings to mind the tears that were shed at their parting. Thus he yearns to see him again that he might be filled with great joy.
2Ti 1:5 I recall6 your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you.
In his reminiscence he brings to mind the sincere faith that dwells in Timothy as was in his grandmother and mother, his father was a Greek and was probably not a Christian. He had been brought up in a Christian home, although an advantage it does not mean that the person will automatically become a Christian. The decision has to be a personal one and Timothy had decided to follow Jesus, not by the faith of his grandmother or mother but his own as received from God (Eph. 2: 8).
3. Stir Up V6 - 7
2Ti 1:6 Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands.
It would seem as if Timothy was in danger of neglecting the gift that he had received from God at his ordination (when Paul had laid hands on him to take charge of the church at Ephesus). So he reminds him of the need to continually fan the flame and thus keep it fervently burning, that is constantly use it. Although we are not told what this gift is the following verse would suggest to me that it was the baptism of the Holy Ghost (Acts 8: 18).
2Ti 1:7 For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.
It is suggested that Timothy was a very timid person but it is difficult to accept this when we consider that Paul had left him in charge of the church in Ephesus, the place where a riot broke out when he preached the Gospel and he stayed there. In 1 Cor. 16: 10 -11 Paul does say to the Corinthians that they were to make certain that he should be with them without fear, but fear is not necessarily timidity. We all have fear at some time or other but the truth is that it is not of God for He has given a spirit of power, that is the Holy Spirit (Acts 1: 8) also a spirit of love, that is the Holy Spirit (Rom. 5: 5) and a sound mind, that is a calm, well-balanced, disciplined mind. Note who this comes from, not ourselves but from God.
4. Be not Ashamed V8 - 12
2 Ti 1:8-10 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God’s power accept your share of suffering for the gospel. 9 He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel!
Because God has given His Spirit to enable us to stand we should not be ashamed to give testimony of the Lord or for Him. More personally for Timothy, neither should he be ashamed of the fact that Paul was a prisoner but rather to share with him in his sufferings for the gospel sake (Math. 5: 11). The only way he is going to be able to do this is by the power of God, not in his own strength. It is God who has saved, called and leads us into living an holy life unto Him. Not by any merits of our own but according to His will and purpose and by His grace which all comes to us through Jesus Christ before time began. But now in these last days this has been made known through the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has destroyed death and showed us the way of eternal life through the gospel message (1 Cor. 15: 54 - 57).
2 Ti 1:11 For this gospel was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher.
Paul was called for the very purpose of proclaiming this goods news and to teach these things.
2Ti 1:12 Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do.But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day.23
This is the reason why he suffers persecution and is in prison and yet he is not ashamed of it. Nevertheless because he knows, has a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ and has proved His word and faithfulness, he is absolutely convinced that he will guard and keep him until that Day when Christ comes for His own.
5. True to the Faith V13 - 18
2Ti 1:13 Hold to the standard24 of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Timothy had received from Paul the sound, wholesome teaching of the fundamental truths of the Christian faith. He was to hold fast to this and to study the word that he might receive an accurate and more full understanding of its truth for himself. (Rather than being taught parrot fashion).
2Ti 1:14 Protect that good thing26 entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
That good thing committed to his charge is the gospel message which he is to pass on without error. This he can only do by the Holy Spirit that dwells within him.
2Ti 1:15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
Paul was certain of Timothy remaining true to the faith unlike those of Asia, the province of which Ephesus was the capital, who had turned away from Paul. Hermogenes and Phygellus were presumably leaders of these people.
2Ti 1:16-17 May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my imprisonment. But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me.
In contrast to these people Onesiphorus and his household remained faithful to him. This man particularly was not ashamed of the fact that Paul was in prison but purposely sought for him when he was in Rome and often ministered and comforted him by his company and providing for his material needs.
2Ti 1:18 May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus.
Paul prays that a gracious reward be given to Onesiphorus in return for his graciousness in that Day when Christ comes.
