Chapter 4

1.   Preach the Word 1 - 5.

2Ti 4:1  I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:

Paul with strong solemnity earnestly gives Timothy a charge in the presence of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, the One to whom God has appointed to judge the living and the dead (Acts 10:42, 2 Cor. 5: 10) when He comes to set up His Kingdom.

2Ti 4:2  Preach the message, be ready whether it is convenient or not, reprove, rebuke, exhort with complete patience and instruction.

He is to continually preach the Word, to keep a sense of urgency about it whenever he has an opportunity to, when it is convenient and when it is not.  He is to use it to "convince" (reprove AV) that is, to call to account to show one his fault; to "rebuke"  and "exhort"  and to teach sound doctrine with patient endurance.

2Ti 4:3  For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.

Why is this a matter of such urgency and importance ?  Paul prophetically says the time will come when professing Christians will not put up with sound teaching. They will turn away from it and those who proclaim it and will surround themselves with and acclaim, those  who will speak the words they want to hear  that will not admonish convict or lead them to grow in Christ  but will satisfy and cater for their own needs.

2Ti 4:4  And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths.

They will turn away from listening to the truth and give heed to the wild imaginations of men's minds.

2Ti 4:5  You, however, be self-controlled in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist's work, fulfill your ministry.

As for Timothy he is to be constantly on his guard to remain calm and collected (in full control) in everything.   To endure hardships and to do the work of an evangelist (preach the gospel) and to carry out fully his ministry.

2.  Kept the Faith 6 - 8

2Ti 4:6  For I am already being poured out as an offering, and the time for me to depart is at hand.

Paul realized that his life was drawing to a close  and so wanted to make certain that Timothy would continue the work of teaching sound doctrine that he had received from Christ and had faithfully imparted.

2Ti 4:7  I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith!

Throughout his Christian life Paul had continually contended for the faith.   He had "fought long and hard for my Lord"  (Living).   He was now approaching the finishing line of the race he had run (Heb. 12:1).   He had not turned back or given up but had kept faith with Christ.

2Ti 4:8  Finally the crown of righteousness is reserved for me. The Lord, the righteous Judge, will award it to me in that day — and not to me only, but also to all who have set their affection on his appearing.

It only remains for him to receive a "crown of righteousness"  (the victor's crown) that awaits him in heaven.   This he will receive from the Lord, "the righteous Judge" , when He comes for His Church (1 Pet. 5: 4).   It is not only Paul who will receive this crown but it will be given to all those who have loved and longed for His return.

3.  Forsaken 9 - 16.

2Ti 4:9 - 12 Make every effort to come to me soon. For Demas deserted me, since he loved the present age, and he went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is a great help15 to me in ministry. Now I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

He urges Timothy to make every effort to come speedily as Demas has deserted him because of his love for the things of this life and it is supposed returned to his home town, Thessalonica (Math. 13: 20 - 22).    Crescens had gone to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia.   Luke the physician who had accompanied Paul to Rome had remained with him.   He asks Timothy to bring John Mark with him for he had found him very helpful in the ministry.   This is the same John Mark who had previously turn back from one of Paul's missionary journeys (Acts 15: 39).   Tychicus he had sent to Ephesus.   When he was ministering in Troas Paul had left behind his winter cloak some books and parchments in the care of Carpus so he asks Timothy to bring them with him especially the parchments (2 Cor. 2:12).

Note:  It was at Troas while Paul was preaching a long sermon that the young man Eutychus fell asleep and fell from the window and was raised from the dead.

2Ti 4:14 - 16  Alexander the coppersmith did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him in keeping with his deeds. You be on guard against him too, because he vehemently opposed our words.

It is thought that this is the same Alexander that Paul had given over to Satan for his blaspheme.   By his actions he would have caused much harm to the ministry of Paul but the Lord will pay him back for what he did.   He warns Timothy to beware of him also for he had strongly opposed the message.

2Ti 4:16  At my first defense no one appeared in my support; instead they all deserted me — may they not be held accountable for it.

Although he had many friends in Rome (see Rom. 16) at his first trial before the Roman Emperor no one stood with him to give help, they all forsook him. His pray is that this would not be charged against them.  (Luke 23: 34, Acts 7: 60).

4.  The Lord Stood with me 17 - 18.

2Ti 4:17  But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed for all the Gentiles to hear. And so I was delivered from the lion's mouth!

Although all men had forsaken him the Lord stood with him and gave strength and an opportunity to preach the gospel so that the Gentiles would hear the way of salvation through Christ.   At that time he was delivered from the jaws of death.

2Ti 4:18  The Lord will deliver me from every evil deed and will bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever! Amen.

He was assured that the Lord would always deliver him from all the plans and purposes of wicked men  and bring him safely into His heavenly Kingdom.  To God be the glory forever more. Amen!

5.   Final Greetings 19 - 22.

2Ti 4:19 - 20 Greetings to Prisca and Aquila and the family of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth.28 Trophimus I left ill in Miletus.

In closing his letter Paul sends greetings to Prisca and Aquila who had been co-workers with him at one time (Rom. 16:3) and to the household of Onesiphorus who had oftened cared for him and was not ashamed of Paul being a prisoner (2 Tim. 1:16).   Erastus the city treasurer of Corinth had remained there and Trophimus who had become sick he had to leave at Miletus.

2Ti 4:21  Make every effort to come before winter. Greetings to you from Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters.

He urges Timothy to do his best to come before winter.   Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brethren send greetings to Timothy.

2Ti 4:22  The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.

Finally he pronounces the blessed assurance that the Lord Jesus Christ and His grace is with Timothy.   Amen.
