Chapter 6

1.   Respect Masters 1 - 2.

1Ti 6:1  Those who are under the yoke as slaves1 must regard their own masters as deserving of full respect. This will prevent the name of God and Christian teaching from being discredited.

Those who are owned as slaves and have hard and disagreeable conditions, as implied by the word yoke, should respect their own masters and esteem them for their position.  This is so that no occasion be given for the name of God or the teachings about Him should be blasphemed.

1Ti 6:2 But those who have believing masters must not show them less respect5 because they are brothers. Instead they are to serve all the more, because those who benefit from their service are believers and dearly loved

Those who have masters who are fellow Christians are not to be disrespectful or scornful because they are brothers in Christ.  They should rather be all the more willing to serve them because they are faithful and participate of the benefits of salvation.   These principles are to be taught and exhorted.

Although the context of these verses are not applicable to us today, there being no slave and master situation in this country, the principles still apply if we are working for others, whether it be voluntary or for payment.   There are still those who have been put in authority who are to be respected, whether in church or secular positions (Heb. 13: 17). The relationship between slave and master if they are both saved is clearly defined in Paul's letter to Philemon (Phil. 1: 16).

2.   Error and Greed 3 - 10.

1Ti 6:3  If someone spreads false teachings8 and does not agree with sound words (that is, those of our Lord Jesus Christ) and with the teaching that accords with godliness,

Paul has some blunt words to say concerning those who teach anything different to what he has said and who do not agree with the sound nourishing words of the Lord Jesus Christ that is in agreement with godliness.

1Ti 6:4  he is conceited and understands nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in controversies and verbal disputes. This gives rise to envy, dissension, slanders, evil suspicions,

Such people are so inflated with their own self-conceit that they know nothing of the truth.  They have a sick mind (original meaning) a morbid desire for questioning and disputing over every word.  Their only purpose is to cause jealousy, quarrelling, blasphemies and wicked suspicions within the church.

1Ti 6:5  and constant bickering by people corrupted in their minds and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness9 is a way of making a profit.

They continually irritate and annoy with their useless discussions and corrupt minds that have become bereft of the truth they once knew; regarding godliness as a money making business.  Have nothing to do with these people.

1Ti 6:6  Now godliness combined with contentment brings great profit.

The most important and beneficial things are spiritual, the heavenly for they are eternal and the only things that will give real satisfaction (Col. 3: 1 - 2).

1Ti 6:7  For we have brought nothing into this world and so we cannot take a single thing out either.

We came into this world with nothing and it is certain that we shall go out of it with nothing (Job 1: 21, Psalm 49: 17).

1Ti 6:8  But if we have food and shelter, we will be satisfied with that.

If we have enough food and clothing we should be satisfied with this (Luke 12: 27 - 31.

1Ti 6:9  Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into temptation and a trap and many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

Those that set their minds upon obtaining money and becoming rich fall into temptation and will do all sorts of wrong things to get it and be ensnared by the devil.   Doing stupid things that will hurt them and others and will take them into hell.

1Ti 6:10  For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

The source of all evils is a love for money that some having yielded coveted riches and have turned away from the faith.   They have brought upon themselves much pain and sorrow.

3.   The Good Confession 11 - 21.

1Ti 6:11  But you, as a person dedicated to God,keep away from all that.Instead pursue righteousness, godliness, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.

Paul's appeal to the man of God is that no matter what anyone may do he is to turn his back upon these things and to pursue righteousness, (a right standing with God and true goodness) godliness (Christlikeness), faith, love, steadfastness and gentleness (Gal. 5: 22).

1Ti 6:12  Compete well for the faith and lay hold of that eternal life you were called for and made your good confession for in the presence of many witnesses.

Fervently endeavour to contend for the faith and take hold of the crown, the price of victory that is eternal life to which God called you to.   This profession of faith had been confessed by Timothy before witnesses and is made by all believers when they are baptised in water.

1Ti 6:13  I charge you before God who gives life to all things and Christ Jesus who made his good confession before Pontius Pilate,

Throughout this letter Paul has made solemn charges to Timothy he does so now in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and the Lord Jesus Christ using Him as example of a true and faithful witness when He gave a good testimony before Pilate (John 18: 36 - 37).

1Ti 6:14  to obey this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ

He must keep the commandment given in verse twelve unblemished so that no one can find fault with it until the Lord Jesus Christ returns.

1Ti 6:15  — whose appearing23 the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, will reveal at the right time.

In His own time God will reveal who is the supremely blessed ruler over all things, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 17: 14, 19: 16).

1Ti 6:16  He alone possesses immortality and lives in unapproachable light, whom no human has ever seen or is able to see. To him be honor and eternal power! Amen.

God alone is deathless it is in Him only that the believer has eternal life (John5: 26,1 Cor. 15: 53 - 54).   He inhabits light  and no man can approach Him (1 John 1: 5).   No man has seen or can see God; (John 1: 18) honour  and eternal power belong to Him. Amen.

4.   Instructions to the Rich 17 - 19.

1Ti 6:17  Command those who are rich in this world's goods24 not to be haughty or to set their hope on riches, which are uncertain,25 but on God who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.

Those in the church who are rich in this world's goods are to be careful that they do not become proud and arrogant nor trust in their money for it  will soon be gone.   Instead let them put their trust in the living God who will abundantly provide all things to enjoy.

1Ti 6:18  Tell them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, to be generous givers, sharing with others.

They are to use the wealth that they have to do good works, willing to be generous and to share then they will be rich indeed.

1Ti 6:19  In this way they will save up28 a treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the future and so lay hold of what is truly life.

By doing this they will be laying up treasure that will endure forever, a safe investment for eternity (Math. 6: 19 - 20).   Taking a hold of that which is life indeed.

5.   Safeguard Sound Doctrine 20 - 21.

1Ti 6:20  O Timothy, protect what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the profane chatter and absurdities of so-called "knowledge."

The final exhortation to Timothy is that he should not fail in doing the things that God has entrusted to him: to safeguard the sound doctrine that he has received.   To not get involved with blasphemous and empty discussions and contradictory scientific theories that isn't true science.

1Ti 6:21  By professing it, some have strayed from the faith.Grace be with you all.

Those who make a profession of salvation and expound and participate in these theories are in error (missed the mark) and have lost the way concerning the faith.   God's grace be with you all. Amen....
