Chapter 2

Pray and give thanks for all men and the reason why 1 - 8.

2:1  First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people,

This first exhortation that Paul is about to give is not just to Timothy (he does not say I exhort you)  or to pastors for that matter but for all saints.   He invokes them to make supplications, that is, petitionary prayer, make requests; Prayers -- worship and praise and intercessions -- mediate plead on the behalf of others.   This is not selective according to our prejudices but embraces all men, sinners and saints.

2:2  even for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

Paul new the natural tendencies of believers not to pray for those who opposed, persecuted, tortured and put them to death so he specifically says kings (this included Nero who had already set fire to Rome and laid the blame on the Christians whom he was also persecuting).  Pray for all those who are in authority and positions of responsibility that they may do that which is right in the sight of God and uphold the Divine principles so that believers may be able to live in peace and quietude and able to fulfill all their duties toward God and man.

2:3  Such prayer for all is good and welcomed before God our Savior,

This kind of praying, for all men, is good and acceptable in the presence of God who is our Saviour.

2:4  since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

As Paul gives God the title Saviour he follows on that as He has provided salvation for all men through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ,  God desires that all men should come to a knowledge of this truth.

2:5  For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human,

This is reason why believers should pray for all men because there is only one God (Isaiah 45:22) and there is only one who mediates between God on behalf of men and that is the Lord Jesus Christ (Heb. 9:15).

2:6  who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God's purpose at his appointed time.

This same Jesus gave His own life as the redemptive price for all that have sinned (Rom. 3:23, Math. 20: 28).   The fact that Christ gave His life as an atonement for sin on the cross is the witness given that    "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  (John 3:16).

2:7  For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle -- I am telling the truth; I am not lying -- and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

This is the reason why God called and appointed Paul as a preacher and an apostle.   He affirms this by calling upon Christ to bear witness that he his speaking the truth.   Also a teacher to the Gentiles to proclaim the gospel message of faith and truth.

2:8  So I want the men to pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without anger or dispute.

Consequently, he desires that men should pray in every place lifting up hands made holy by Christ to God (Psalm 141:2) without there being any anger or dispute.     (Phil. 2:14).   "There should be nothing of the spirit of contention; there should be no anger toward others"  (Barnes).   The word used for men here "aner"  is used to specifically mean men only elsewhere in this chapter the word "anthropos" meaning human being is used.    This leads on to our next heading that is specifically addressed to women (Greek is "gune", a wife).

A Christian Woman's Adornment 9 - 15.

2:9  Likewise the women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. Their adornment must not be with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing,

Turning his attention to women he desires the same propriety (correct or appropriate behaviour) in them concerning public worship as he requires of men given in verse eight.   They should not make their dress or hair styles the center of attention or adorn themselves with costly jewelry but dress modestly and sensibly.

Note.   Modestly, without adornment or extravagance.   Sensibly, with good sense or in a reasonable or intelligent manner.   In other words to dress in a tidy and respectable manner that will give glory to God.

2:10  but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God.

Rather they are to concentrate on the inward adorning of the spirit, the nature of Christ.   This will be reflected in the way that they behave and as they give themselves over to good works (Eph. 2:10).

2:11  A woman must learn quietly with all submissiveness.

She is to learn the things of God in the assembly with a stillness of spirit and  without asking disputable questions or making a fuss (1 Cor. 14:32-34). Be submissive to those who are in authority Heb. 13:17).

2:12  But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. She must remain quiet.

Paul did not allow a woman to teach the Word of God or to exercise authority over a man  "laying the law down to men"  (D. Guthrie) but to remain silent in the church.   As there is no reason given for this we can only conclude that women who had received Christ as their Saviour were causing problems in the church using their new found liberty in Christ as a license to do as they pleased.

2:13  For Adam was formed first and then Eve.

However, Paul uses the order that God ordained in the beginning to show the woman's position to man.   Adam was made first then Eve.

2:14  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, fell into transgression.

In relation to  gullibility (tendency to believe too readily and therefore to be easily deceived) Paul points out that it was Eve that was taken in by Satan and broke God's command not Adam.    This he does to show the greater possibility of a woman being deceived by false teachers and teaching erroneous doctrine.

2:15  But she will be delivered through childbearing, if she continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control.

The sentence God put upon women because of Eve's transgression was that they would suffer pain in child bearing (Gen. 3:16).  This sentence however does not hinder them being saved any more than the penalty placed on Adam.   It was through the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, born of Mary, that salvation came.   If they continue in the Christian values of faith, love , holiness and self control they will be kept safe and sound in childbirth.
