Chapter 5

Triumphant Faith 1 - 5.

(1Jn 5:1)  Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered by God, and everyone who loves the father loves the child fathered by him.

(1Jn 5:2)  By this we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and obey his commandments.

(1Jn 5:3)  For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments do not weigh us down,

All who believe and have excepted Jesus Christ as God's Son and as their Saviour is a child of God, born of His Spirit.   If this is so then all who love God the Father will also love those who are His children.  We will know that we love the children of God  when we love God and obey Him.   Loving God is doing what He tells us without it being a trial or grievous to us.

(1Jn 5:4)  because everyone who has been fathered by God conquers the world.    This is the conquering power that has conquered the world: our faith.

Whoever is born of God is able to triumph over the things of the world through trusting in Christ (Phil. 4: 13).  It is by our faith in Him that we have the victory.

(1Jn 5:5)  Now who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

It is only he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God and who trust in Him can be victorious over the world.

2.   The sureness of God's Witness 6 -9.

(1Jn 5:6)  Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood — not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

(1Jn 5:7)  For there are three that testify,

(1Jn 5:8)  the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement.

We know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God by the three that bear witness to it on earth.  The water -  There are many opinions on what is meant by the water the most feasible is when the Lord was baptize of John in the river Jordan and the Holy Spirit descended as a dove on Him and God spoke from heaven witnessing that He was His Son (Luke 3:21-22). The blood -   the sacrifice He made upon the Cross for the sins of the world (Luke 9:30-35). The Spirit -  The Spirit of Truth that He has sent into the world to bear witness of Him (John 15:26).

(1Jn 5:7)  For there are three that testify,

There are three who bear witness to this in heaven - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, these three are one, the Triune God.

(1Jn 5:9)  If we accept the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that he has testified concerning his Son.

If we accept the witness that people give in our courts (that is what the term used here means) then how much sure is God's testimony that He has given regarding His Son.

3.   Life in Christ 10 - 13.

(1Jn 5:10)  (The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning his Son.)

(1Jn 5:11)  And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

Every believer has a witness within him  that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, he has no doubts about this for God has borne witness to it.  He /she knows the work of grace that has be done in his life by the indwelling power of Christ.   Whoever does not believe what God has said is calling Him a liar.   This is what makes the unbeliever's sin so awful: the sin of unbelief (M. Henry).      The evidence is this - that God has given us eternal life through His Son (John 3:15, Rom. 6:23).

(1Jn 5:12)  The one who has the Son has this eternal life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this eternal life.

He who possesses the Lord Jesus Christ is in possession of eternal life.   He who does not is condemned to a life of everlasting torment and punishment (Math. 25:46), Rev. 14:11).

(1Jn 5:13)  I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

The purpose of John writing to fellow believers is to give them the assurance  that they have eternal life and to exhort them to continue to believe in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.   Why did he need to do this ?   Because of the false teachers and prophets that abounded in his day and today.   Instruments of the devil  seeking to devour believers (1 Pet. 5: 8).

4.   Praying His will 14 - 15.

(1Jn 5:14)  And this is the confidence that we have before him: that whenever we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Through Christ we have boldness and confidence to come before God in prayer (Heb. 10: 19) to ask of Him anything that is according to His will and know that He will hear us.   If we do not know how we ought to pray then the Holy Spirit will help us if we ask Him (Rom. 8:26).

(1Jn 5:15)  And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from him.

If we have the assurance that God has heard us then we will also have the assurance that He has granted our requests.

5.   Sin unto Death 16 - 17.

(1Jn 5:16)  If anyone sees his fellow Christian committing a sin not resulting in death, he should ask, and God will grant life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death. There is a sin resulting in death. I do not say that he should ask about that.

We ought to pray one for another (James 5:16).  Here John specifically says that we should pray for a brother/sister who is committing a sin that does not lead to death.   We should ask God to convict and bring them to repentance  forgive and restore them.   The sin that will bring death we should not pray for.  The Lord Jesus Christ said that every sin that a man commits will be forgiven Him except the sin against the Holy Ghost  which will bring death (Math. 12:32).

(1Jn 5:17)  All unrighteousness is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.

All unrighteousness is sin and there is sin that does not lead to death  that may be repented of and forgiven.

6.   We Know 18 -21.

(1Jn 5:18)  We know that everyone fathered by God does not sin, but God protects the one he has fathered, and the evil one cannot touch him.

True believers belong to God, they are of God, from Him and to Him and for Him (M. Henry) and therefore do not willfully and deliberately practice sin.   The one who has saved us (Jesus Christ) watches over us to protect and keep us from the devil (John 17:12-20; Gal. 1:4).

(1Jn 5:19)  We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

That we are of God and the whole world round about us in the power of the devil.

(1Jn 5:20)  And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us insight to know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This one is the true God and eternal life.

That Jesus Christ has come in the flesh and has given to those who believe an understanding of spiritual things that we might know Him that is Truth more and more.   That we  are in Him and He is in us (John 17: 23)   He is the true God  and Life Eternal.

(1Jn 5:21)  Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

John closes with an exhortation to all believers to keep themselves from idols.   Amen.
